First look: Trailer for "Sinister"

Friday the makers of “Paranormal Activity” and “Insidious” released the first trailer of their latest movie, “Sinister,” starring Ethan Hawke. Just like those two films, the trailer looks very scary — but it remains to be seen if the film itself can sustain 90 minutes of tension and chills.

Of the two other movies, the latter held up fairly well in the translation from trailer to full-length film. The former… not so much.

Hawke, who got his big break on the the film “Dead Poets Society,” hasn’t been known for doing horror films, although he did do a stint as a neo-noir vampire in “Daybreakers.”

The trailer for “Sinister” shows Hawke as a writer who moves his family into an old house only to discover a disturbing secret about its former occupants. And more importantly, what still lurks there.

It also bears the developing signature style of its makers, as the artistic choices bear a remarkable resemblance to “Paranormal Activity” and “Insidious.”

The film will be directed by Scott Derrickson, whose credits include “The Exorcism of Emily Rose.” Vincent D’Onofrio also stars in the movie, which premieres August 24.

Yet another Abraham Lincoln trailer

After being subjected to the gay version of Abraham Lincoln in an Electric Six video, it’s good to see one of our forefathers kicking some serious ass on the big screen as a vampire hunter. That’s right, Abraham Lincoln as a vampire hunter.

It sounds like the fodder for high camp comedy, but there is definitely a dark side to this film, which is produced by Tim Burton. But don’t get your hopes up too much ladies, Johnny Depp is not in this one.

But judging from the trailer it looks like a serious piece of summer horror fun, and this trailer in particular, is one of the more violent variations that have been released so far. Which is to say, the best so far, duh.

Is Colin Farrell the remake king?

What is up with Colin Farrell? First he engages in that travesty of a remake for “Fright Night.” Now he’s taking on “Total Recall?”

Really? Really?

Not only is this a waste of Hollywood dollars and celluloid, but of a perfectly talented, and let’s face it, pretty freaking hot actor. He is definitely more pleasant on the eyes than Arnold Schwarzenegger, so I’ll concede that point. I’ll also concede this trailer looks fairly good, but then trailers tend to look fairly good when you basically put together a short piece of all the best moments in it.

Having said that, I remain cautiously optimistic that this might actually be a pretty good decent remake of the classic retro hit. What do you think?
