Syfy jumps on the zombie bandwagon with new series ‘Z Nation’

Syfy announced April 6 in a press release they will debut their own zombie horror show, “Z Nation,” this fall. The 13-episode series will focus on the struggle to save humanity after a zombie apocalypse.

Sounds kinda familiar, doesn’t it?

The series will be produced by The Asylum, the company that brought us the pop culture phenomenon “Sharknado,” so this show might have a little more dark humor than that other zombie show, “The Walking Dead.” Maybe you’ve heard of it?

Karl Schaefer — whose previous credits include “Eerie Indiana,” “Eureka,” and “The Dead Zone” — will serve as executive producer and showrunner.

“‘Z Nation’ will take viewers where no zombie has gone before,” said Schaefer in the press release. He also said the show adds “a sense of hope to the horror of the apocalypse — our everyday heroes take the fight to the zombies. It’ll be an epic journey unlike anything you’ve seen before.”

It isn’t clear whether the show will play up any humor, but Syfy’s Chris Regina, Senior Vice President, Programming, said it wouldn’t be as bleak as other zombie series, without specifically naming the show he was obviously referring to.

“‘Z Nation’ is a unique new journey into the long established zombie genre. Instead of existential despair, the series offers hope that somehow, some way, humanity will not only survive, but triumph. In producing their first ever weekly series, our long-time partners The Asylum have created a different way of telling an iconic story.”

“Z Nation” will pick up the story three years after the apocalypse, where survivors have found one person who seems immune to the zombie virus, and holds the key to a cure in his blood. But it won’t be that simple, because apparently our potential world-saving hero has a secret he’s keeping from those trying to transport and protect him.

‘Bitten’ stars talk favorite moments of first season

As “Bitten” wraps up its first season Monday night, series stars Laura Vandervoort, Greyston Holt and Greg Bryk sat down for a media conference call Friday to preview the season finale, and talk about some of their favorite moments filming the rookie series for Syfy. Here’s what each of the three had to say:

Greg Bryk: I’m going to say that I have favorite moments with each of the characters. With Greyston, I really love the moment when I was sick in bed and there was just like — for me, with a son, and this sense of there’s tensions and people grow … Clay was forced to deal with his incredible burden so soulfully.

But that sense that the younger will look after you in your moments of vulnerability to me was very resonate.

And for Laura, it really was there was the two moments: one when she was going to be leaving and told me, and the heartbreak of that. And then the fear of having to tell her the truth. Like there was just — there was such honesty and danger for me as a person, as an actor — and just how gracious they are as fellow performers, fellow artists, that it just made it so wonderful to reveal that about yourself. It’s an extraordinary cast. I feel blessed, you know, to love people.

Laura Vandervoort: Yes. And thanks Greg. I mean, like, it’s true. You can’t pick one scene because I feel like I’ve had — like you said, in ones with everybody that just really touched me, and more than I expected it to. You know, you read the scene and it’s emotional and dramatic, but you actually get into it and you’re looking into the other person’s eyes and they’re genuinely there.

And we all care about each other so much that it just feels genuine and it’s easy to work off of.

And, I remember that one of my favorite scenes with Greg — well, there’s a couple, and Greyston — Greyston and I had our first sort of moments of being nice to one another. We both said it was odd in the flashbacks .. We were both saying, “It’s weird to smile and be nice to one another,” because we had just been so horrible.

And then also, we had, you know, a wonderful scene by the fire place where we sort of connect for the first time and let down their guard.

In terms of episodes, there was an episode that — it was four or five where Elena changes for the first time with Greg — and the turmoil that she goes though … I loved, you know, the entire day just being exhausted and really putting everything into it, in the cage, and that fatherly/daughter relationship of him trying to help me get through it.

I just thought it was so well done and everyone was great.

Greyston Holt: And if I can get to pitch in. I would have to agree with Greg. My favorite scene, Greg, was with the same scene. I just wanted – it’s really interesting to show like these tender moments. You know, these – you know, where we can have the tendency to be quite violent in this show, and you know, it’s really – it’s nice to play these tender sides – the tender side of us, you know, and these intimate moments.

And with Laura, there’s a scene coming up that I really like that hasn’t aired yet in 13. We’re in the bathtub and I’m weak and you’re taking care of me, and after all that’s happened, it’s a really beautiful scene and obviously working with both of you guys and the whole cast has been such a treat and a blessing.

Laura Vandervoort: And Greyston, I’ve seen the finale. I’ll talk to you after about what’s not in it anymore.

Uh-oh. That didn’t sound good.

Let’s hope Holt didn’t get a big scene cut, as sometimes happens. But if you do want to find out what happens on the season finale of “Bitten,” be sure to tune into Syfy tonight.

Spoilers: The final episode of ‘Being Human’

Syfy’s “Being Human” comes to an end Monday night after a four season run, and you can expect the series to go out with a major bang tonight. Warning: below are spoilers from a preview screening of the finale Monday afternoon.

Expect a Trip Down Memory Lane

There will be reminiscing about the history and the stories over the course of the series in tonight’s finale. Just as fans will be going through a sense of loss at the end coming, so are the characters, as well.

Expect a Sacrifice

One character will make a sacrifice to save another. While that obviously brings more loss and sadness, it also creates a humorous entertaining segment in regards to the character saved.

Yeah, I know how vague I’m being. You don’t really want me to tell all, do you?

Expect a Transformation

One character will go through a very dramatic change in regard to their otherworldly status. In other words, not just a change of heart, but a real change.

Expect a New Beginning

Sorry, guys, we’re not talking spinoff here so much as the promise of a character or characters moving on and being okay. Happy even, with the promise of future blessings.

Expect a Death

Yes, expect a death. At least one, maybe more. And the kind of death where you don’t come back in some other form. And with that, comes the final expectation.

Expect Tears

Yes, have that box of tissues handy for many sad and bittersweet moments, because you’re gonna cry. (That means you guys, too.) Bridges will be burned to ensure that things could never go back to the way they were. It’s really over, fans. But unlike the outcry some shows have had over series finales, you’ll probably be very happy with how they end it.

Well done, writers and cast. Well done.

The “Being Human” series finale airs Monday night on Syfy.

‘The Walking Dead’: Who’s going to die tonight?

Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) – The Walking Dead _ Season 4, Episode 15 – Photo Credit: Gene Page/AMC

Tonight is the season finale of “The Walking Dead,” with speculation and spoilers running rampant across the internet today about who will die this episode and the real nature of the alleged sanctuary of Terminus. The biggest question that seems to be circulating across all sites is whether Rick (Andrew Lincoln) or Daryl (Norman Reedus) will be among the casualties, and sites such as MTV.com seem to think both are possible losses according to their latest article Sunday.

Do you think we might be seeing the death of Rick or Daryl tonight? Who do you think will die?

First of all, unless Reedus wants out of the series, no showrunner in their right mind is gonna kill off Daryl. It would certainly be the most shocking route to go, but that’s kind of also another reason why it can’t happen — there’s no way to top that down the road if Daryl dies. And, of course, that whole factor that fans will completely riot.

As far as Rick, who has traditionally been the main character of the show, it would seem he’s safe for that reason alone, and he would be on any other series. But not on “The Walking Dead.”

Showrunner Robert Kirkman has already revealed that Rick will face a crisis like he has never known before and we will see a completely different side of him in this finale.

“This is Rick Grimes being pushed to his absolute limit. And if you think you’ve seen that before, you haven’t. And the Rick Grimes that comes out of this is really going to shock people,” Kirkman said last week.

As a man who has lost his wife and thinks he has lost his daughter, Judith, there’s not much left for him to lose but his son Carl. Could Carl be a casualty? Could he be reunited with Judith and lose her? Having a baby in the cast has always seemed like a situation living on borrowed time as the reality of having a crying infant in this world is just a fiasco waiting to happen.

As far as Rick possibly dying, some fans have noted that tonight Lincoln makes his first (and possibly last?) live appearance on the series’ talk show “Talking Dead,” which traditionally has not been a good thing for main characters — while some have come on the show without dying, they always come on after they die.

Other cast members at high risk include Beth, who disappeared a couple of episodes ago, and some rumors say the survivors will discover she already met her fate at Terminus — and the cannibalism thing comes up again here. You can fill in the blanks.

And perhaps the most likely death will be in the form of one of the lovers — Maggie or Glenn. “The Walking Dead” writers have traditionally loved to rip away any comfort we can find in the series, and their reunion last week alone is enough to make the powers that be salivate at killing one off. But the possible clincher here is Maggie’s insistence to Glenn he burn her photo, as “he’ll never need it again.”

Uh-oh. Obviously she didn’t learn from her TV dad’s big speech about how you “risk your life everyday now and all you can do now is decide what you risk it for” as a huge foreshadowing of his bloody exit. That burned photo is a huge foreshadowing tactic.

But if we go there, then, as MTV.com pointed out, we also have to look at Beth saying that Daryl would be the “last man standing” and him taking a nap in a coffin.

Don’t do it writers. We’ll riot if you do.

The bloodbath known as “The Walking Dead” season finale is tonight on AMC.

Tonight’s podcast with Bitsie Tulloch is in the bag and if you couldn’t stay up till midnight on the east coast (or were out carousing on the west coast,) you can listen to it right here.

We talked about the last season of “Grimm,” the upcoming season, love Wesen-style and a teaser about more “shirtless rage” to come. From someone other than Capt. Renard (Sasha Roiz.)

We ladies sure hope she means David Giuntoli or maybe Russell Hornsby. Or just for fun, Monroe (Silas Weir Mitchell,) or lets get really wacky and see it from Sgt. Wu (Reggie Lee.)

First Look: ‘Penny Dreadful’

This is the most promising trailer I’ve seen in a very long time, and I’m beside myself waiting for this delicious mashup of the setting and time period that created “Frankenstein,” “Dracula,” and “The Picture of Dorian Grey.”

“Penny Dreadful” is set to premiere on Showtime May 11, and stars Eva Green, Timothy Dalton and Josh Hartnett. The teaser trailers so far have been very dark and disturbing, and some are already dubbing this the British version of “American Horror Story.” But after the campy “Coven” of this season, this looks to be a much fiercer and horrific beast.

And I mean that in the very best way.

Check out the video trailer for a little taste of this new thriller.
