‘Salem’ casts its spell with stunning debut

Janet Montgomery as “Mary Sibley,” Ashley Madekwe as “Tituba,” and Tamzin Merchant as “Anne Hale” in “Salem.”

When a TV network jumps into the original series game for the first time, they usually have to struggle to find their stride and put out programming on a par with most of the shows that are currently airing. And with its plunge into the original series game with “Salem”, WGN has not produced the show on par with its peers, but surpassed the great majority of them.

Yes, it’s really that good. In fact, even after several repeat viewings searching for flaws or elements to critique for improvement, I have to admit I found the pilot episode flawless.

Not Afraid to Get Dirty

Now, flawless doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the best show on TV, as there is more to creating a winner than simply not making any mistakes. But there are plenty of really strong qualities to “Salem,” starting with the set dressing and costuming. Instead of going overboard making everything neat and pretty and frilly, the creative team that designs the look of the series things gritty and earthy, even in the simple luxury of the wealthy and realistic details you don’t normally see on TV or even the big screen. For instance, instead of glamorizing a possessed village girl, they shaved her head and give her some pretty gnarly teeth. Not fangs or sharpened teeth, but well, mighty unclean.

And for someone who has gone mad in that time period, that’s probably pretty accurate.

Leaving the Camp to Those Other Witches

Along with the earthy simplicity and edginess of the design of the show are very solid performances by the actors who take material that could easily become melodramatic and keep it real. Or it could go to the campy side like those other witches in that oh-so-popular series, but thankfully “Salem” doesn’t go for campy humor, either.

It does, however, dish out healthy servings of gore and violence, more so than your conventional TV channels. This is where channels like WGN have an advantage over the basic network channels, in that they have more leeway to delve into harsher material and a more graphic presentation of it. “Salem” takes full advantage and and may give the squeamish a bit of a pause.

But that certainly isn’t considered a bad thing around here.

The writing is solid and it may not be as showy with plot twists and turns as other shows on TV, but this is a more than respectable debut for WGN and a show that will certainly appeal to horror fans with a very good chance for a crossover to a more mainstream audience like “The Walking Dead” and “American Horror Story.” One particularly interesting bit of dialogue in the pilot revolved around our lead female character, Mary Sibley (Janet Montgomery), who crosses paths with a young ingénue in the local graveyard and gives her some rather menacing words of wisdom.

You know what killed nearly every woman here? Love. Most died in childbirth. So love is to a woman what war is to a man – the most deadly thing you’ll do. Only a fool runs quickly to war or love. You best watch yourself.

Breaking Bad

And around Mrs. Sibley, most everyone should watch themselves. Many characters have a great arc over the entire season of a show, but this lady has seriously broken bad right the beginning. I don’t want to spoil any more for you, because you should be watching the show, even if it means amping up your level of cable service. That may be huge hindrance to the success of this new show for WGN, but let’s hope enough folks will tune in to keep it around for another season.

It’s not only good TV, but it’s damn good horror. And a little Sunday reminder of the darker side of Christianity, with the warning to not let this bit of history repeat itself.

Tonight on TV: A little murder on ‘American Horror Story’

While we may have tipped you off that there was a little murder brewing last week before the last episode of “American Horror Story:  Coven,” we sure didn’t see that one coming. If you didn’t see the episode last week, stop reading because this is your official spoiler alert.

Co-creator Ryan Murphy had tipped us off that someone was going to die on last week’s episode, and most people put their money on poor little Nan (Jamie Brewer). Wrong answer. When Fiona (Jessica Lange) figured out that Madison (Emma Roberts) was in line to become the new Supreme  with her powers were amping up — and draining Fiona’s power — Miss Fiona figured it was just about time to take out the competition. And she did her in with the flick of the knife blade, just like she did the former Supreme, when she took over that role.

This woman can make Joan Crawford cringe and cower.

But that was far from the only crazy thing last week. I mean, where do we even begin? We had crazy voodoo rituals with animal sacrifice, lots of blood and a ritual that called for 2 ounces of “your husband’s baby gravy,” Which if you didn’t figure out what it was, the jar with white stuff in it should’ve made it clear. Ew. Then we have the really disturbing story of Frankenboy (Evan Peters) who we found out was just a little too close with his mother in a decidedly non-motherly way.  And if that wasn’t enough to make us curl up into fetal position, there was that… uh, unfortunate scene between the Minotaur and Queenie (Gabourey Sidibe).

WTF are y’all on in that writers’ room? I know it’s cable TV, but Lord have mercy.

Kudos to the writers for that little moment in the previews for the upcoming episode showing what’s left of Madison sticking out from a rolled up carpet: sparkly shoes. Nice “Wizard of Oz” reference. This season definitely has a more cheeky feel than the asylum.

Check out the preview video and gallery of photos from tonight’s episode of “American Horror Story.” And also, you might want to check out “Ghost Hunters” on Syfy. You can DVR it or they repeat it later Wednesday night like FX does this series.

Tonight on TV: ‘American Horror Story’ casualty?

For tonight’s episode of  “American Horror Story,” I can tell you right now we’ve got big-time spoilers, so if you don’t like that kind of thing, you best stop reading now. And I mean right now. You have been warned.

Seems show co-creator Ryan Murphy dropped a huge bomb over at E! Online when he revealed that one of the witches will die on Episode 3. Meaning, tonight’s episode. Now, I think it’s fair to say it won’t be Zoe (Taissa Farmiga), Madison (Emma Roberts), or Cordelia (Sarah Paulson) as they are listed as major cast members. Likewise, I’m thinking Queenie (Gabourey Sidibe) is probably not on the chopping block as it looks like there’s going to have some… dynamics between her and Madame LaLaurie (Kathy Bates), who, shall we say, comes from a different time when not only was it okay to own slaves, but in her mind, to torture and kill them.

Yeah, that’s gonna be interesting.

So that leaves poor Nan (Jamie Brewer) as the girl most likely to be killed by Fiona (Jessica Lange) this week, if that spoiler is accurate. I suppose it could possibly be someone outside the house, but another spoiler circulating is that the Council of Witches steps in any time one witch is killed by another, and that this event sets up a new conflict for Fiona and Myrtle (Frances Conroy), who apparently have crossed broomsticks before.

As far as any other spoilers or news about the show, we see many sites reporting that Lange is done with the series. Actually what she was saying, was that Season 4 would be her last. Which is pretty much what she said over a month ago: The “American Horror Story” matriarch had already said that she might come back for Season 4, but if she did, that would definitely be the last one.

This ain’t breaking news folks. Read all about it right here.

So I guess y’all know where to get your AHS news, now don’t you? So check out the photos and the video below, and tune into FX tonight for the next installment of “American Horror Story: Coven.”

American Horror Story premieres KILLER promo

american horror story poster coven

A detail of the official poster for “American Horror Story: Coven.”

“American Horror Story” released one of their best promos yet of any season during the premiere of “Sons of Anarchy” Tuesday night. In the 30-second spot, we see a line of witch initiates in black high heels and a variation of the traditional witches hat marching up the porch. They proceed past a twisted pig man and the levitating girls to enter into the domain of the three witches.

Now these three witches are are not just standing around the house like you and I would, but are elevated on huge stilts with long flowing black dresses and masquerade masks covering their faces as the initiates march in. Then BAM! they take away the masks to reveal this season’s matriarchs of the show: Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates, and Angela Bassett.

Did anyone else notice the white cat that ran across in front of them? I always love the twists those folks at “American Horror Story” put into each season theme they do. You can expect some very interesting takes on the traditional witch and voodoo priestess when the series premieres in October. And with the likes of Lange returning, along with Bassett and Bates… we’re going to have some acting diva overload this season.

And let’s not forget the young’uns that are coming back: Taissa Farmiga, Evan Peters, Lily Rabe and LanaBanana… er, Sarah Paulson. Emma Roberts and Gabourey Sidibe have joined the cast this season, as well as a host of other supporting guests. The latest addition is Danny Huston this season, playing Lange’s love interest. The “Magic City” alum dropped into the cast this week as he obviously has a lot of free time on his hands with the cancellation of his show.

How much witchy goodness can these guys pack into one little 30-second promo? A helluva lot, as you’ll see.
